LONG TERM TESTING:
Since long term radon testing is usually done for a period of one year, the testing is done under normal living conditions in your home. Measure radon in air samples by an alpha track radon test during every season of the year insuring a better estimate of the annual radon problem at the site tested. Variation in the amount of radon coming into your home may be greatest in the winter time when the ground is frozen and all of your windows and doors remain closed and you are using clothes dryers, bathroom fans, etc. exhausting air out of the house. Exhausting air out of the house in the spring, summer, and fall with open windows, will reduce your indoor radon. Using the long term radon test will allow you to continue all of your normal annual habits.
To get a good year round average of radon in the air found in your home, use one of our alpha track radon test kits. This radon gas test remains in your home for more than 90 days. Use of alpha track detectors is usually 3 to 12 months, but since they are true unifying devices, alpha track detectors may be exposed for shorter lengths of time while measuring higher radon concentrations. The long term radon detector is a small piece of special plastic or film inside a small container. If air containing radon diffuses through a filter covering the hole in the container, radon and its decay products strike the detector causing damage tracks. The number of tracks on a given area determines the concentration of the radon at the site tested. When the test is over the container is sealed and returned to the laboratory for analysis.
